How to tether an Android phone or tablet to a laptop?

Share an Android Phone or Tablet Data Connection

If your Android phone or tablet has Wi-Fi and/or 4G or 5G connectivity, which most do, then you can share or tether an android phone or tablet to a laptop or other internet devices.Tether Android to laptop

For example, if your Android phone or tablet is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, then you can connect your PC to your Android device, then also access the internet from your PC via your tablet’s already connected Wi-Fi connection.  The same is true if your Android device is connected using 4G/5G.

So if you are at the airport, and there is not a Wi-Fi hot spot available, then you can connect your Android device to the internet using your 4G/5G connection, then tether a PC to the Android phone or tablet (hopefully a laptop since a desktop would be a little bulky to carry to the airport) and then access the internet on your PC via the 4G/5G connection.  Pretty cool, eh?  Don’t expect lightening fast speed, but the connection should be fast enough to handle email and simple websites. Here’s how:

Tether an Android Tablet to PC via a portable Wi-Fi Hotspot:

  1. Open the Settings application on your tablet
  2. Touch Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
  3. Check Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
  4. After a moment, the tablet starts broadcasting its Wi-Fi network name (SSID), so you can connect to it with up to 8 computers or other devices. An ongoing notification is added to the System bar, to the left of the time. Uncheck Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to stop sharing your data connection via Wi-Fi.

Using a Bluetooth connection:

Another option to tether an Android tablet to PC is to connect via Bluetooth.

  1. Pair your tablet with your computer.
  2. Configure your computer to obtain its network connection via Bluetooth. For more information, see your computer’s documentation.
  3. Open the Settings application on your tablet
  4. Touch Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
  5. Check Bluetooth tethering.

Using a USB connection:

  1. You can tether an Android tablet to PC using the USB cable that came with your tablet.
  2. Open the Settings application on your tablet
  3. Touch Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
  4. Check USB tethering. The tablet starts sharing its mobile network data connection with your computer, via USB connection. An ongoing notification icon is added to the System bar, to the left of the time.
  5. Uncheck USB tethering to stop sharing your data connection. Or just disconnect the USB cable.

Here are some USB cables you can purchase to establish the USB connection:
