Instructions on how to use an Android phone or tablet as a WIFI hotspot

Use an Android Tablet as a Wi-Fi HotspotYou can use an Android phone or tablet as a Wi-Fi hotspot if your phone or tablet has a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection, which most do, and is also running Android 3.x or higher, then you can allow other computers or smart phones to connect to the internet via the tablet’s connection. This is another way of sharing your data connection with other devices, in addition to using USB and Bluetooth.  This is also referred to as tethering a computer or phone to the tablet.

First you must be able to connect to an internet access point via your Android phone or tablet’s WIFI or Mobile data connection.  Once connected, you can use an Android phone or tablet as a WIFI hotspot so other devices can also access the internet through your Android tablet PC.

Share your Android phone or tablet data connection as a portable WIFI hotspot

  1. Swipe down on your home page twice to open all the quick access settings icons.
  2. Look for the icon labeled Mobile Hotspot and touch it to turn on the mobile hotspot.

After a moment, the tablet starts broadcasting its WIFI network name (SSID), so you can connect to it with up to 8 computers or other devices. An ongoing notification is added to the top system bar.

Rename or secure your portable hotspot

You can change the name of your tablet’s WIFI network name (SSID) and secure its WIFI network.

  1. Swipe down on your home page twice to open all the quick access settings icons.
  2. Look for the icon labeled Mobile Hotspot and do a touch and hold (long touch) open the settings for the mobile hotspot.
  3. On this page, you can change the Network name, Password and the Band preference.
  4. Touch on Configure for more detailed security settings. Generally, you don’t need to change anything on the Configure page.

The Configure WIFI hotspot dialog opens. You can change the network SSID (name) that other computers see when scanning for WIFI networks. You can also touch the Security menu to configure the network with WIFI Protected Access 2 (WPA2) security, with a pre-shared key (PSK). If you touch the WPA2 PSK security option, a password field is added to the Configure Wi-Fi hotspot dialog. If you enter a password, you will need to enter that password when you connect to the Android device’s hotspot with a computer or other device. Or touch Open in the Security menu to remove security from your WIFI network.

  1. Touch Save.

How to see the WiFi password

How can you see the WiFi password?
WiFi passwords are stored on your Android phone or tablet. Depending on the version of Android you have, you may or may not need to root your device in order to look up the passwords. If your Android phone or table is rooted, then you can find the file that contains the passwords of all your WiFi connections in the data\misc\wifi directory.
