Change the Default Apps on an Android phone or tablet

You may change the default apps on your Android phone or tablet.  Android phone manufacturers add value to their products by selling them with a lot of pre-installed apps.  Many of which you may not want.  You may have your own favorite app that you like to use for browsing the internet, or checking email, or listening to music, etc.

To change the default app, first you need to download it and install it on your device (How to install Apps).  Then when you are opening a file that the app uses, you will get a pop-up asking you what app you want to use for that file type.  For example, if you touch on a mp3 file to open it, the smartphone will give you a pop-up asking which app to use. You can select your favorite app and then click on the “always use” app option.  Then the device will always use that app for any file from the same file type, .mp3 in this example.

If you want to tell the device all the apps you want to use so you avoid the pop-up asking which app to use, you can:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Apps.
  3. Tap on the three-dot menu on the middle-right side.
  4. Tap on Default apps.
  5. Choose which category of Default apps you want to change (assistant, browser, launcher phone, SMS, etc.). I’ll tap on the Messages app.
  6. Here you will be presented with the available alternatives installed on your phone. Tap on a different app.

To clear the default setting, follow the same procedure, but instead of touching “Set as Default” touch “Clear Defaults”.
